How to Treat Swelling for Kidney Patients
Swelling is a common symptom of Kidney Disease. How to treat it? Different causes have different treatment plans. Go on reading to find more information.
Causes of swelling for kidney patients
The causes of edema in kidney patients can be roughly divided into the following three categories:
1. Declined renal function
One of the main functions of the kidney is to drain the water. The blood is filtered through the glomeruli to form primary urine, and then reabsorbed through the renal tubules to form the urine. When the glomeruli are severely damaged, the filtration function is severely reduced, resulting in the failure of normal water metabolism. Oliguria or even anuria may occur, accompanied by edema.
2. Colloid osmotic pressure imbalance
This is mainly caused by protein loss. In patients with Nephrotic Syndrome, large amounts of albumin leak out, leading to a decrease in plasma albumin, which is the key material to maintain the equilibrium of colloid osmotic pressure. Once the colloid osmotic pressure is out of balance, the water in the blood vessels will flow into the outside of the blood vessels, causing edema.
3. Crystal osmotic pressure imbalance
This is the common "water and sodium retention" in kidney patients. When the electrolyte is out of balance, the abnormal metabolism of sodium ions is forced to stay in the body, which will lead to the imbalance of the osmotic pressure of the crystal, so that the water in the cell flows to the outside of the cell, resulting in edema.
Treatment for swelling
Once the cause of renal edema has been determined, treatment can be established.
- For edema caused by declined kidney function, in addition to limited drinking water and the use of diuretics, some serious patients also need dialysis;
- For edema caused by massive protein leakage, we should improve the level of plasma albumin, which can help solve the problem of edema fundamentally.
- For edema caused by water and sodium retention, we should balance electrolytes through medication and dietary adjustments, along with diuresis.
In our center, systemic Chinese medicine treatment is often used into kidney disease treatment. It can make use of various therapies to eliminate the excess fluid from body via urine, sweating and bowel movement. It can also improve blood circulation and increase blood flow into kidneys so that enough essential elements such as oxygen, nutrients and active ingredients of medicine can be transported into nidus to speed up kidney recovery. Moreover, it can reduce renal inflammation and halt the progression of disease. After about one week’s treatment, swelling will vanish. After about one month’s treatment, your kidney disease will be under control, and renal function will get improved. And then excess fluid can be passed out naturally.
